Zane Lowe, Tonight after 12 whole years has played his final Radio show for BBC Radio 1. He will now embark on new adventures at a unspecified role with Apple (heavily rumored to be their streaming service to rival spotify) over in L.A. It has been an emotional week for the New Zealand DJ as various BBC Radio 1 presenters have said their goodbyes throughout the week with it all leading up to his final show. Zane kept things light throughout the evening not choosing to talk too much instead focusing on playing as many massive hits from bands that he has championed and introduced to listeners over his career including Arctic Monkeys (who featured heavily), The Killers and Gnarls Barkley.
The entire set was chosen by different members of his production crew, his friends and his family before Zane himself chose his final track "A Song For The Dead" from his favorite band Queens Of The Stone Age who he thanked by saying;
"This is the only one I've chosen tonight. Now, you could get emotional, or you could just check it out. One band has been a constant for me throughout this whole journey, given me more one-liners that I've passed off as my own, given me more great music than I could possibly hope to digest in a lifetime and they've been kind to me too. This is my last song, Queens Of The Stone Age, 'A Song For The Dead'. You can't even hear it."
You can still listen to the whole show on the BBC iPlayer link below (which also features an interactive set list) in case you missed out or just want to recap on an epic 2 hour set of pure music hits...
I've gathered a few snippets of what different muscians had to say about Zane below but before you read that I'd just like to take a minute to say my own personal #ThanksZane
"Zane Lowe's passion is music and you could tell that from each and every radio show he presented, It's hard to find a station or DJ that completely nails your music personality but for me that was Zane, from his interviews and exclusives with all of my favorite artist such as Arcade Fire, CHVRCHES, Paolo Nutini and Arctic Monkeys to his feature long interviews with some of Hip Hop's greatest such as Kanye, Jay and Eminem, I would always find a reason to tune in at 7pm even if it was just to discover brand new music to get into..... So from The Perfect Tempo I'd like to say a massive #ThanksZane"
Now here's just a short sample of what some bands and artists such as CHVRCHES and Ella Eyre had to say about Zane ahead of his last show...
