10 Acts to Watch……
READING & LEEDS 2016
This year’s Reading and Leeds Festival is only 3 weeks away!, We’ve chosen some of the best acts for you to check out at the festival, some are veterans you may have already heard of before, others are new and upcoming bands you may have not but what they all have in common is that they will all put on unmissable sets you can’t miss!
We’re not sure of set times so fair warning in advance some of these acts may clash.
The past couple years the music industry has been having the debate about not having enough new headliners for music festivals, Foals however have done it the hard way, slogging their way up both charts and festival lineups over the past 10 years resulting in bringing a finely tuned yet crazily unpredictable live energy to the stage.
They are finally making the step up to headline one of the biggest UK festivals and are ready to prove everyone wrong, they're sure to do this whilst making you have the wildest time of your life.
Last year Foals played a secret set at Reading and tore the roof off the tent, since then they’ve gone on to release a fantastic fourth album, enthralled audiences around the world, got kicked off the stage at Coachella and triumphantly subbed Glastonbury.
Foals bring a whole different and bigger type of energy to their live performances, perhaps the best example of this was that secret Reading set last year, check it out below, we can only imagine what extra ferociousness they have in store for their first ever headline performance on the Reading main stage.
Scottish trio CHVRCHES just seem to be going from strength to strength, they’ve released arguably the best album of last year, toured over 350 shows in only a few years which has seen their live show improve dramatically.
They’ve grown through the festival ranks to be subbing this years Reading/Leeds festival, it’s bound to be a brilliant performance and you feel this could be the turning point that could see them finally make it to headliners.
Their live performances will see you go suitably crazy, check out their Glastonbury performance of Clearest Blue below to see why!
3. JACK U
This is Jack U’s first ever UK performance and you feel it will most definitely be worth the wait! known for an epic and crazy dance party of a live gig, Jack U consists of mega DJ’s Skrillex and Diplo, their joint act doesn’t just rely on their solo materials though, it’s backed by a very good dance album of their own consisting of “Take U There (with Kiesza)” “Where Are U Now? (with Justin Bieber) and “To U” (with AlunaGeorge).
I saw them live at Coachella and I can guarantee two things, firstly lots of guests (Kanye, Post Malone, Kiesza and AlunaGeorge all featured to name a few) and secondly you will walk away with the biggest grin on your face
Watch them closing Ultra Festival in Miami back in 2015 below, watch out for a special guest towards the end who is conveniently in the UK the week before, who know’s maybe Bieber will also make his Reading + Leeds debut?
4. RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS
Legends of Rock and Reading itself, The Chili’s return for a fourth headline performance at the festival, the Californian band don’t need much describing, It’ll be my first time experiencing them live (as will most 16-24 year old’s attending I imagine).
I can’t wait to hear rock classics that I grown up with such as “Under The Bridge” and “By The Way” performed live, not to mention their new material is surprisingly solid, watch them performing new single “Dark Neccesitites” earlier in the year below…
5. BOY BETTER KNOW
Grime collective Boy Better Know like the genre itself have had a resurgence, people doubted their headline credentials when announced as closers for Wireless festival earlier in the year but they absolutely smashed it and bought Pharrell Williams with them while they were at it.
Featuring Grime classics as well as massive new songs from Skepta’s Konnichiwa it’s bound to send the crowd into a frenzy, check out Skepta performing Man with members of BBK at BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend below.
You probably have no idea who Californian DJ duo Lemaitre are, the’ve avoided success over here in the UK, their live show is rare in which live instrumentals and powerful beats get you suitably enthralled. their song “Cut To Black” soundtracked that friends video made by Facebook that was everywhere last year but the real highlight has to be the fantastic “Closer”, It sent a packed out tent crazy when they closed out Coachella this year against the headliners LCD, we had the times of our lives as you can see below.
7. ANDERSON PAAK
Yet another Californian on the list is Anderson. Paak, he’s legend of rap’s Dr. Dre’s newest prodigy after featuring on the majority of 2015’s ‘Compton;. He’s also a solid performer in his own right with a critically acclaimed album released this year titled ‘Malibu’, He’s set to be the next big thing in the Rap Genre and you should make sure you catch him while you still can!
At Coachella this year he brought out both Kendrick Lamar and his mentor himself Dre for a rare live performance, check it out below.
A surprising addition to both this list and the sort of music you expect to see at Reading + Leeds but trust us she definitely has the fiery personality to match and you should miss her at your peril
Lapsley has a tremendous voice with a solid vocal range to match. Earlier in the year we described her as the next Adele and it’s easy to see why, beautiful songs matched with very funny and sometimes very explicit stage banter, This makes her a joy to see live and will be sure to smash your expectations when you check her out.
9. THE VACCINES
Another band that has slowly worked their way up through the festival line up’s over the years are The Vaccines, you'll most likely be familiar with their brilliant debut album 'What Did You Expect...' which blew away expectation’s all the way back in 2011, They are no longer the new kids on the block however, they've since released a highly underrated third album last year which included some of the years best but sadly overlooked rock songs such as ‘Handsome’ and ‘Dream Lover’
They bring a whole different energy to their live shows and you feel now’s their time to shine and show everyone why we fell in love with the band in the first place!
10. A$AP ROCKY
A$AP ROCKY frustrates me, he’s now had two brilliant rap albums released but still feels as if he hasn’t really made an impact in the UK, I place this down to a very inconsistent live show which when he isn’t performing at 100% or his heart isn’t in it can be lacklustre to say the least.
However when he’s on fire and at full speed, be prepared for one of the best live shows in Rap and you just know that If he gives it his everything like he knows he can then you’ll be gutted to miss out.
so the question Is will you take the risk?
