Each Sunday, The Perfect Tempo provides you with the 5 best songs released this week! This is our Sunday Service.
- Childish Gambino - Stand Tall
Childish Gambino aka. Donald Glover released his third album this week, which I’ll have a review up later this week once I’ve had time to properly digest it, a surprising turn to say the least as the rapper embraces funk for one of the years most beautiful releases.
I’ve already featured the stunning single that is 'Redbone' on a previous edition, so this week the highlight falls on album closer 'Stand Tall' in which Gambino is at his most delicate with a touching track that is aimed at his young son.
The lyrics see him recount advice given from his own father which he is turn passing down to his own child as the track progresses, at points It sounds as if he is practically speaking the song, this makes it even more poignant when those heavenly backing vocals rise up into the track, the result is that it leaves the song feeling almost spiritual.
This is easily my highlight of this week by far, check out the track below and make sure you go buy or stream the rest of the album.
- The Rolling Stones - Ride Em On Down
Yes you read that correctly!, it’s 2016 and we have (technically) brand new music from The Rolling Stones, I say technically because their latest album “Blue and Lonesome” is a collection of (you guessed it) old Blues cover’s, however The Stones and more specifically Jagger with his harmonica make them sound fresh and relevant.
It’s surprisingly hard to separate the sound of this album from early 70’s Stones material and to say that is fantastic, it shows that after all these years that signature sound still remains which is fair to say can't be said about alot of heritage acts.
When picking a song to feature it had to be the excellent “Ride Em On Down” (a cover of Eddie Taylor’s 1955 original) It’s got a very raw feel with a rough sound, which in our times is refreshing to be able to hear some proper unpolished rock and roll, The boys on this track truly shine and will have your foot tapping from the first note to the last, also make sure to watch out for Mick’s terrific harmonica solo at the songs epic climax.
And to top it all off the accompanying music video is easily the best released this year, check it out below…
- Run The Jewels - Legend Has It
Run The Jewels are back!, Killer Mike + El-P have always been honest whilst coming at you with their brutal bars and beats, their return is all you expected and so much more!
“Legend Has It” taken from their 3rd album ‘RTJ3’ Is all kinds of awesome from Killer Mike’s verses to THAT backing beat, both the track and the upcoming album feel like a much deserved victory lap from the duo and if you’ve been following the pair for a while then you know it’s more than deserved.
They’ve come a long way in the last few years and made a few strong political statements, they are never afraid to shy away from the big issues and this track feels like a true celebration of what they have achieved, if your looking to get pumped this weekend then play this song and make sure you play it loud!…..Oh and just try not to start chanting “RTJ! RTJ! RTJ!”
- C Duncan - Other Side
This is a real special track, despite being nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2015, I personally feel C Duncan is criminally overlooked and can’t wait to see him support Elbow next year on their tour
‘Other Side’ feels almost dreamlike, his choral like vocals blend in with synths and piano keys creating an almost tranquil like sound and to top it all of it’s all been produced by himself, he is certainly a very talented musician but I feel the best way to describe this track is for you to hear it yourselves
- Benjamin Francis Leftwich - If You Give Me Fire
I first saw Benjamin supporting James Morrison at the iTunes Festival way back in 2011, it was only the third gig I’d ever been to yet after hundreds since he has managed to stand out, I’ve tried to keep tracks on his releases since and I’m more than happy to say his back releasing more music.
Despite releasing his second album ‘After The Rain’ only a few months ago he’s already back with new material, ‘If You Give Me Fire’ will leave you completely transfixed for it’s entire 4 minutes, this is down to the fact the song puts full focus on his tremendous vocals which are bound to have you feeling all sorts of emotion.
I can’t recommend this guy enough, If your a fan of either Ben Howard or Bon Iver’s second album’s you sure to be left more than satisfied by this track.
