Wake Up Gigs

When Nick Mulvey & Rob Green came to Omeara for Wake Up Gigs at the beginning of June the result was a match made in heaven.

Wake Up Gigs is an incredible and unique concept in which parents and their children can enjoy a gig together as a family, in an environment especially catered to them. We were lucky enough to get to experience first hand at the projects largest event back in June when they hosted Nick Mulvey and Rob Green at the Omeara.

Run by Adam and Sarada, Wake Up Gigs is a passion project in which the more you learn about it, the more you discover there is to love. Simply put, this initiative isn’t designed for profit it’s for creating a safe space in which music-loving parents can enjoy fantastic acts without the usual parental constraints such as late night curfews and children not being allowed. The pair sums it up perfectly by saying “Becoming a parent need not be the end of enjoying live music. Wake Up Gigs allows parents to experience live music, with their family, in a relaxed and welcoming environment.”

We can happily report that is certainly the case, as we witnessed every single detail for each event is meticulously planned, this doesn’t just include the musical side but it also includes plenty of activities too. There’s everything from karaoke to face painting available for the kids to participate in throughout the afternoon. No need to worry about being quiet either, kids are actively encouraged by artists to dance, sing and get involved with them. Another fear of parents at many gigs would of course the space being overcrowded, this has also been acknowledged by Sadara who makes sure to reduce the capacity of each venue to accommodate kids, thus allowing them free space to roam.

Speaking of artists, when we went to see the event it was headlined by the phenomenal Nick Mulvey, if you’ve read this site often you’ll know he’s a beloved artist by us. His mixture of uplifting melodies and powerful lyricism have made him stand out as one of Britain’s best acoustic singer-songwriters. Performing off the back of a hugely successful UK tour which included a sell-out date at the Royal Albert Hall. However, for his Wake Up set, he stripped it all back. It’s a massive catch for a growing project to grab an incredibly acclaimed artist, especially to have them perform in such intimate surroundings (a mere 150 capacity room).

Nick’s set was a delight, recently welcoming his second child into the world, he was the ideal artist to perform in front of what must have been his youngest audience yet. Many of his songs have plenty of interactive elements, various hums and little rhymes which worked perfectly in this environment. Through this he was able to interact with both the kids and parents with his usual cheeky sense of humour and high spirits. performing pretty much an identical set to the one he did at the Royal Albert Hall the audience were truly in for a treat, kids and parents alike seemed to both have a fantastic time.

The afternoon didn’t begin with Nick however, support act Rob Green was an early highlight. The soul styled singer was a complete natural, tons of onstage charisma meant he stole the kid's hearts and that of a few parents! His interaction with the children was very impressive as he had all of them singing, clapping and dancing along. Most definitely not a novelty act, however, Rob has an array of various influences and sounds in his music as he switches between solo, guitar and loop pedal with ease. You’d be surprised by just how powerful his voice is, latest single ‘Belief’ was certainly a highlight not to mention his mash-up of a selection of beloved 90’s classics.

We weren’t the only ones in the audience enjoying the afternoon, we were quick to spot renowned BBC Radio 6 DJ Steve Lamacq and one of Britain’s most incredible female singers Jessie Ware in attendance, having a great time enjoying the music with their children.

So what’s next? If you want to catch Nick Mulvey you’re in luck as he’s just put on a bunch of new dates for an intimate acoustic tour just like his Wake Up Gigs set, (you can view dates and tickets here) Rob Green meanwhile has been elevated to headliner for the next Wake Up Gigs which takes place very soon! August 12th in fact at The Ace Hotel.
